Skin Self-Examination Using Skin Cancer Images

The need for aggressive treatments with strong side effects can be avoided when skin cancer is detected at its earliest stage of development, if you know what to look for. Skin cancer symptoms are visible on the surface of the skin unlike other forms of cancer. The best way to catch skin cancer early on is to perform regular skin examinations and consult your doctor if you find anything suspicious. You can use skin cancer images as a guide, showing you what possible symptoms require medical attention.

Diagnosing skin cancer at its earliest stage of development makes it possible to remove the tumor through a simple outpatient surgery. Even the most serious form of skin cancer, melanoma, can be removed in this way if it is detected in time. If skin cancer is allowed to continue to develop, the tumor will grow and metastasize, making the removal and biopsy of local lymph nodes necessary. If the cancer has spread through the lymphatic system, radiation or chemotherapy will be used to try to destroy any wandering cancer cells. Cancerous skin cells may travel to other parts of the body and grow into additional tumors in other organs or systems. This will mean more aggressive treatments, including surgery if possible, and in some cases, the cancer may become impossible to cure and only symptoms can be treated.

Considering how common skin cancer is and how important it is that it be treated as early as possible, people need to know not just how to prevent skin cancer but how to find it before it advances. The best detection method is similar to a breast exam. People need to perform periodic skin self-examinations, searching every part of their skin for possible skin cancer symptoms. Images of skin cancer symptoms can be used as examples, helping people determine which skin irregularities they find during their skin self-examination require a doctor’s opinion. Melanoma may be indicated by new moles or changes in existing moles, or nevi, especially dysplastic nevi, which are irregularly shaped moles. The detection of nonmelanoma skin cancer can be complicated by the fact that these cancers may have a similar appearance to rashes, sores, or small lumps, but they do not heal on their own. People who don’t know that these may be skin cancer symptoms may choose to wait for them to heal rather than seeing a doctor if they don’t have images to compare them to.

If a person has appropriate background information, skin cancer images can be useful in helping them detect skin cancer before it advances. - By Adam Hefner
